Nudity is a form of vulnerability. Who are we if we take away our key identifier, our clothes? My idea is to construct an installation dealing with our own identities from subjective various matter: ethnic, where we are raised, our interests, etc. One part of the installation is humorous, another part more traditional/serious. The humorous side has identity kits: a goth vampire ready to wear kit, a mermaid punk, a hipster nerd. These are all displayed as kits with the clothes including accessories. They might have a retail price on them as part of humorous tongue in cheek take on subjectivity and pricing in the art world. The items may be available to sell as either a collector’s fine art item, or as a fashion/costume kit. Displayed as a series of portraits of people: scientists, writers, activists, artists, and others who inspire and interest me, painted as portraits that lead one to think they are cropped nudes, or rendered as paper dolls, with the hint of nudity to them.Betty T. Kao is an artist and writer, integrating both mediums as tools for storytelling.
