ARTSLAM 2010
THURSDAY 10/21 | 530PM - Onwards Participating Artists:
Betty Taopat Kaos, Amy Chan, Dmitry Borshch, Jing Zhou, Vivian Oyarbide, Maia Cruz Palileo, Justin Baldwin, and more
For the past several years, the Asian American Arts Centre has held a series of slide/art slams, allowing emerging artists the opportunity to present and talk about their work, meet and network with each other as well as with more established artists and critics/curators. Last year, the Centre hosted an art slam, showcasing the work of 5 excellent artists working in various media.
On Thurday, October 21st, Asian American Arts Centre will be hosting the annual ARTSLAM, showcasing the work of emerging Asian-American & Asia influenced artists.
Admission is FREE. Potluck fun.
The ARTSLAM Series is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency and from The New York Department of Cultural Affairs. The Asian American Arts Centre was founded in 1974 in New York City as a not-for-profit organization to address the distinctive concerns of Asian Americans in the United States. Its mission is to promote the preservation and creative vitality of Asian American cultural growth through the arts, and its historical and aesthetic linkage to other communities.
Betty Taopat Kaos is an artist and writer, integrating both mediums as tools for storytelling. She is interested in how artists use images to voice the collective subconscious. Betty is a visual storyteller, her major influences and investigations include anthropomorphic objects, toys, packaging, metaphysics, religious mythology, Pan-Asian culture, sacred plants, environmentalism, and medicine. Her work explores the mythologies and memetics of our culture. The mixed-media nature of her work relates to how she interprets her surroundings in relation to herself. She was raised in New York City, a place where global culture prevails, and a single neighborhood will speak predominantly five different languages, but be fused with dozen of cultures. Her award winning art and writing have been featured in various publications including The NuyorAsian Anthology: Asian American Writings About New York City.
The October 21st Art Slam will feature a special potluck event (dish encouraged but not required to attend!) to support and promote the Asian American Arts Centre community. Please join us at 5 pm to see artist presentations and stay to enjoy food and meet staff, artists, and friends!
Admission is FREE.
