Center for Traditional Music and dance is pleased to present a lecture/performance exploring Central Asian music and culture now resident in New York featuring ethnomusicologist Evan Rapport, Ph.D. (The New School) and members of the renowned Ensemble Shashmaqam.

Rapport is the author of the new book, Greeted With Smiles: Bukharian Jewish Music and Musicians in New York (Oxford University Press). The program will be held at 4:00PM at the Coney Island Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library (1901 Mermaid Avenue), and is part of our series with City Lore and the Center for Art, Tradition and Cultural Heritage examining the impact of the Hart-Celler Immigration Act of 1965.

Additionally, for a third year, CTMD is working with Rapport in offering a course at the New School entitled “Global Voices.” This semester CTMD staff folklorist Dr. Eileen Condon copresents a course on Haitian music and dance with Peniel Guerrier, KONGO-Haitian Roots Music, and other members of Verite Sou Tanbou, CTMD’s Haitian Community Cultural Initiative.

Presented in coordination with City Lore and the Center for Art, Tradition and Cultural Heritage. This program is made possible by funds from the New York Council on the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
