Dance In The Round

Saturday, June 24, 2017
4 – 6PM

Dance In The Round is an inclusive workshop led by dancer/choreographer Parijat Desai in Garba and Raas—circle dances from Gujarat, India, now danced across the diaspora. This event is open to all abilities and genders, ages 8 to 88. After an invigorating warmup, Parijat will offer instruction in the basic steps, and a brief sequence that takes you around the circle. She’ll guide you slowly, and before you know it, you’ll be dancing away…

Garba and Raas are typically played during the Navratri season, nine nights of dance and community. Dance In The Round is about offering inclusive spaces to play Garba-Raas, and to practice steps before the Navratri season.

Between each learning segment, there’ll be time for all to dance in a large circle. At the end, we’ll learn Raas, played with dandiya or wooden sticks.

Dance In The Round will be held at Gibney Dance Center, 890 Broadway, 5th Floor, Studio 1. Gibney is located between 19th and 20th Streets. *KID POLICY: This workshop is oriented to adults, but children are welcome. As we cannot offer special instruction for kids this time, please note: Kids 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. For kids under 10, you must have one adult per child. We love them, but please keep track of your children! NOTES FOR ALL: Comfortable, ideally loose, bottoms suggested. Long skirts and/or kurtas welcome, but not required. No shoes on dance floor. If your feet need support, please bring a pair of indoor shoes to wear in studio. Bring water. *We’ll provide basic sticks, but if you have decorated dandiya, bring them!
