DANCE IN THE ROUND: Flood Recovery Benefit Workshop

In Dance In The Round, choreographer/dancer Parijat Desai teaches Garba and Raas–circle dances that originate in Gujarat, India, and are played across the diaspora.

WNYC’s Arun Venugopal (from Houston) will offer brief remarks. To accompany, we’ll have percussionist Aaron Paige and nonstop Garba tracks!

WORKSHOP DETAILS: After an invigorating warmup, Parijat guides you into the basic steps of Garba – before you know it – you’re travelling around the circle. Already know how to garba? We welcome you to jam in the inner circle! Parijat and a few dancers will also perform a brief demo dance. We’ll finish up with learning Raas (played with dandiya or sticks).

DITR will be held in beautiful Studio 1 at Gibney Dance Center/890 Bway, near the QNR/456 trains.

DRESS: Comfortable loose bottoms suggested. Long skirts and/or kurtas welcome, but not required. No shoes on dance floor. If your feet need support, please bring a pair of indoor shoes to wear in studio. Bring water.

KID POLICY: This workshop is a kid-friendly but instruction is geared to adults of all ages and young people 11 and up. Kids under 11 must attend with an adult. Kids under 8 must be with an adult at all times. For very small children under 5, two adults present is recommended.

KID TICKET POLICY: A ticket is required for each child age 5 and up.
