Ice Theatre of New York (ITNY) presents Jody Sperling's "Arctic Memory”

October 27 – October 30, 2017
7PM

Ice Theatre of New York (ITNY) is proud to announce the ice skating premiere of award-winning dancer/choreographer Jody Sperling’s “Arctic Memory,” an environmentally conscious creation, at its 2017 Home Season at Sky Rink, Chelsea Piers in New York City, October 27, 28 and 30.

“Arctic Memory” had its genesis in a 43-day polar science mission north of the Arctic Circle in which Ms. Sperling was the first, and to date only choreographer-in-residence aboard a US Coast Guard icebreaker. During the voyage, Ms. Sperling danced on Arctic sea ice and made a film, “Ice Floe,” which won a 2015 Creative Climate Award from the Human Impacts Institute. The Ice Theatre performer wears a cape hand-painted with the fissures in Arctic sea ice, the dancer’s movements suggesting a time-lapse series of floes moving and melting.

Ms. Sperling is Founder/Director of Time Lapse Dance. Having brought the legacy of Loie Fuller into the 21st century, she currently focuses on using visual-kinetic narratives to connect choreography and climate science. This is her entrée into the world of dancing on ice.

With performances by Ice Theatre of New York’s professional ensemble under the direction of Elisa Angeli, the evening will include a re-staging of “Tango Images” by the late ballroom dance choreographer Peter DiFalco.

Joel Dear and Christian Erwin will reprise their acclaimed duet, “In Passing.” It is a dance full of passion and romantic desire about an encounter in a city of strangers, where two men make a connection in a fleeting moment and create a memory that is forever imprinted in their minds.

The Company will further present a restaging of Gary Beacom’s “Malevolent Landscape” in which Eliot Halverson personifies the piece; in addition, new ensemble works by choreographers Elisa Angeli, “Rhapsody in Blue,” and Line Haddad, “11/11” will be presented. Ice Theatre’s Junior Ensemble will also make their debut.

Special guest performer, Olympic Champion Evgeni Plushenko will also perform on Saturday and Monday night.

Monday, October 30 will be ITNY’s Benefit Gala and Performance, which will honor US and World Pair Champions Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner.

Evgeni Plushenko’s appearance in ITNY’s Home Season marks his first performance in the United States in 11 years. Plushenko is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, four-time Olympic Medalist, three-time World Champion, seven-time European Champion and ten-time Russian National Champion.
