Image-in-Focus: Chen Jiang

Drop by to hear their unique perspectives on select highlights from Hiroshi Sugimoto: Gates of Paradise. Chen Jiang is a second-year PhD student studying Japanese art history at Columbia University. Her research focuses on the art and visual culture of the Meiji era (1868-1912), with particular interests in tourist photography, export art, and art exhibitions of modern Japan. She graduated summa cum laude from Amherst College in 2015 with a B.A. in History of Art, writing an undergraduate honors thesis on the relationships between cultural, national, and gender identities in the photographic self-portraits by Morimura Yasumasa. She then received her M.St. in History of Art & Visual Culture from Oxford University in 2016, where she examined in her dissertation the artistic career of the nanga painter Noguchi Shōhin. Prior to entering Columbia, she has held internships at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Mead Art Museum, Pace Gallery, and Ullens Center for Contemporary Art.Free with admission to the exhibition.
