In And Of The Movement: Student Visions of Justice, Then & Now

Thursday, February 25, 2016
5:30 – 7:30PM

Curated by Mark Tseng Putterman

From 1970s Black radicalism to post-9/11 anti-war efforts, student activism at NYU has long been tied to social justice movements in the city, the country, and on other campuses. Students at NYU have sought to leverage institutional resources and visibility towards their visions of a more just society over the course of the university’s history. As recent events at the University of Missouri, Yale, and other colleges have demonstrated the power of student-led movements to affect change, we bring together alums and current student activists for an intergenerational conversation on the past, present, and future of student movements at NYU.

Panelists: Arielle Andrews (NYU ’16, Black Student Union president), Mickey Fuertes (NYU ’04, Phi Iota Alpha, and LUCHA), Angus Johnson (historian of student activism, Hostos Community College), Dee Mandiyan (NYU ’16, SHADES thought leader), and Amy Surak (archivist, Manhattan College). Moderated by Rick Chavolla.

Cosponsored by the NYU Center for Multicultural Education & Programs and A/P/A BRIDGE.
