Madame White Snake

October 8 – October 16, 2011
3PM

Adapted from the classic Chinese tale, “Legend of the White Snake”, from the Ming Dynasty, this new two-act musical created by Jackie Huang is set in the Southern Song Dynasty of China. After many years of practice, White Snake (Bai Suzhen) and her maid and confidante Green Snake (Xiao Qing) are able to transform into human forms. While enjoying their power and worldly surroundings, they meet a young scholar Xu Xian. White Snake falls in love with the Scholar and the two eventually marry. Feeling neglected, Green Snake becomes jealous of their romance and at once makes an attempt to seduce the Scholar. A Buddhist monk (Fa Hai), recognizing the unusual romance, is determined to break up the pair. The Scholar is shown the true identity of White Snake and, in confusion, leaves her. In revenge, Green Snake tries to undermine the Monk’s power by seducing him as well. A clash between the Monk and the two snake-transformed beauties ensues. The unexpected outcome is anything but traditional.
