Music From Pakistan: Sachal Jazz Ensemble & JLCO with Wynton Marsalis

Friday, November 22, 2013
8 – 10PM

The Sachal Jazz Ensemble is a group of virtuosic master musicians from Pakistan who incorporate Eastern instruments such as sitar, sarod, tabla, and dholak into new interpretations of jazz standards that are informed by their own rich musical tradition. The group has proven to be a viral sensation with nearly 700k views of their interpretations of Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five” and REM’s“Everybody Hurts” on YouTube.

In this ground-breaking collaboration, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and the Sachal Jazz Ensemble will perform new arrangements, blending the sonorities of modern and ancient instruments and using the jazz form to integrate American values of blues and swing with sophisticated and highly-evolved Eastern music traditions. Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is filming the remarkable Sachal Jazz Ensemble for a documentary to be released in 2014, which will conclude with this highly anticipated JLCO collaboration. This project furthers JALC’s commitment to cross-cultural understanding.

Watch the Wynton Marsalis Quintet and the Sachal Jazz Ensemble perform “Limbo Jazz” and “Rythmesque.”
