Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College (BCBC) commemorates Earth Day with its annual National Grid Earth Day Celebration on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at 3pm. This interactive family event will take place on the plaza outside Brooklyn College’s Walt Whitman Theatre immediately following the 2pm presentation of Sid the Science Kid—Live!, a new family musical based on the popular PBS KIDS® television series. Brooklyn Center’s Seventh Annual National Grid Earth Day Celebration is free and open to the public. Tickets to Sid the Science Kid—Live! are $10 and may be purchased by phone at 718-951-4500 (Tues-Sat, 1pm-6pm) or online at BrooklynCenterOnline.org. Both the performance and the Earth Day Celebration are recommended for ages three and up. The event is sponsored by National Grid, with additional support from TD Bank.

Now in its seventh year, the National Grid Earth Day Celebration is designed to educate families on how they can play a role in caring for the Earth and creating a more sustainable future. Interactive family activities, educational materials, and give-away items will highlight the need for conserving energy, recycling in the home, and having a heightened awareness of the environmental and global issues that we face today.

“Earth Day is an opportunity for National Grid to support our communities by helping to make them greener and cleaner places to live for our customers. I am proud of our employees who participate in this annual event and demonstrate that we all can be responsible leaders and stewards of the environment,” said Ken Daly, President, National Grid New York. “National Grid’s partnership with BCBC is helping to educate families – especially young children – on how to use energy more efficiently and safeguard the environment for future generations.”

This year’s Earth Day Celebration will feature hands-on activities for all ages that will allow attendees to learn about how to take action in helping our planet. Returning favorites include the New York City Fire Department’s fire prevention demonstration; puppeteer Ronny Wasserstrom and his collection of unique marionettes; and the bright sounds of Nydia Mata’s steel drums. In addition, Brooklyn Center will also welcome new partner Million Trees NYC, who will share details regarding their urban tree stewardship program, teaching attendees how to prepare the soil, how to water, and how to provide “Tree LC” to trees in need. Brooklyn-based Recycle a Bicycle will demonstrate the wonders of this eco-friendly vehicle and lead a craft workshop using recycled bicycle parts. Other activities will include Yoga for kids and interactive storytellers.

Sid the Science Kid—Live! and The National Grid Earth Day Celebration are generously sponsored by National Grid, TD Bank, Target, and the Herman Goldman Foundation.
