Event Description

Mayuko Okada has established a unique style and coloring method "Kinuga" (silk painting) , which is developed by the technique of traditional Japanese crafts "Oshie"( pictures made by padded kimono fabric ). In this exhibition, she displays more than 100 Koi fish(Carp) on the entire gallery wall. This creation expresses the combination of stimuli experienced in New York City through various Koi fish energetically swimming along a river. Carp will continue to swim tirelessly while skillfully dodging obstacles resembling NYC's crammed city streets filled with Yellow Taxis . The artist comments "I want to become one of the carp such".She under took numerous number of old kimono from her great-grand-Mother and grand-mother and some of them are older than 100 years. She started this art because she was eager to creatively preserve these exquisite kimono fabrics in different form.

Mayuko has received recognition and several awards in Tokyo, including first prize out of 10,000 applicants for Japanese calligraphy.

Stop by and experience the dynamics of New York City translated through the ethereal aesthetics of Japan.
