For beginning and experienced writers alike: there are no maxims, no "musts" in this workshop. Students will write scenes using prompts and exercises given by instructor; they will work towards completing a full length play, focusing on desire, aliveness, and time and forward movement in a character's body. Exercises are geared towards freeing the writer from the self-inhibiting voice that sabotages the writing process; and towards maximum talkability and visualization that helps differentiate playwriting from other forms of writing, such as poetry or prose.
HAN ONG is the youngest playwright to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. A recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, his plays have been produced at the Public Theater and the Almeida Theater in London, among other places, and have been published by American Theater magazine and TCG Books.
