Event Description

Kunqu opera is one of China’s most renowned traditional theater forms. It combines acting, movement and singing in a total theatrical immersion, which harkens back to a historical past while connecting to contemporary times. The Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe exemplifies this form.

Lanke Mountain is a tale of greed, ambition, betrayal and humor. The role of Cui, the heroine, is acted with total abandon, rarely seen in Kunqu performances which are generally marked by subtlety and restraint. The story is both traditional and contemporary.
