The Festival of Japan: Drums + Dance

The Festival of Japan: Drums + Dance, at the Theater of the Riverside Church on Friday, May 4, at 7:00 PM, is a celebratory performance for the 20th anniversary of the Japanese Folk Dance Institute of NY. Our "Festival" is a collaborative performance with Sukeroku Taiko of Tokyo, Japan, demonstrating the lively, infectious folk dances of Japan, as well as the spellbinding rhythms of taiko drumming.

The Festival of Japan: Drums + Dance captures the essence of Japanese traditional culture, uniting movement and sound in a pure expression of the Japanese spirit. Minbuza, the main performing group of the Japanese Folk Dance Institute of NY, will showcase a wide selection of traditional folk dances from all over Japan. Through the use of authentic folk music and radiant costumes, they have delighted audiences nationwide, performing at the Epcot Pavilion at Disney World Florida, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as media appearances on the Regis and Kelly Show and in the Madonna music video "Nothing Really Matters." Sukeroku Taiko, one of the premier taiko groups in Japan. is internationally renowned for their dynamic movements and furious drumming. They have delighted audiences throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America, as well as Hawaii and the West Coast of the U.S. Appearing for the first time in New York City, they will entertain New Yorkers with a full ensemble taiko drumming performance. Accompanying Sukeroku Taiko on flute will be the brilliant Shinobue player Nobuko Miyazaki. This event has been made possible by a grant from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, support from the Japanese American Association of NY, and is part of the Centennial Celebration of the Gift of Trees, presented by the Consulate General of Japan in NY.
