THREE TREES
By Alvin Eng
Directed by Kaipo Schwab
December 14, 2011 (followed by Christmas party)
7:00pm
Three Trees is a poetic, philosophical rumination about the relationship between sculptor Alberto Giacometti, his muse/model, Japanese existential philosopher Isaku Yanaihara, and Giacometti’s wife Annette. Alvin Eng was last seen at Pan Asian Rep’s 2005 Two Nights Only series with The Last Emperor of Flushing.
“…all artists aspire to create portraits that explore and illuminate aspects of the human condition that stir the soul…to convene the souls in one’s play with the souls in the audience is the most important goal of theatre.”
-playwright Alvin Eng
With:Patrick Melville, Stephen Park, Pandolph Curtis Rand, and Sandy York
ALVIN ENG: Last summer, Alvin was a Fulbright Specialist in Theatre/U.S. Studies at City University of Hong Kong. There, he taught a playwriting and performance workshop, “Our Town: HK/USA," with his wife, producer/director/actress, Wendy Wasdahl. In July, he made his Asian debut performing his memoir monologue play, The Last Emperor of Flushing (LEOF) at XiaoZhou People’s Hall in his family’s ancestral Guangdong Province, China. In “Emperor persona” he gave a commentary on NPR’s All Things Considered. LEOF excerpts were published in Performing Arts Journal (MIT Press). Alvin developed LEOF with Pan Asian Rep. and an Urban Artist Initiative/NYFA grant. He is thrilled to be working with Pan Asian again on Three Trees, his historical drama that explores the relationship between sculptor Alberto Giacometti and his muse-model, Japanese existentialist philosopher, Isaku Yanaihara. It is also the first work of ART/PLAYS, a trilogy of historical dramas that Eng is writing about artists and the nature of portraiture. www.alvineng.com
