"50 Years, 50 Stories" - a do-it-yourself flipcam video campaign to support NYSCA

Fifty Years, Fifty Stories is a campaign which will feature artists and arts organizations that have benefited from NYSCA’s support and, indeed, might not be here today without that support in their early years. The campaign will be launched on YouTube with a series of one minute videos and promoted by the Coalition and its members on our website, Facebook and Twitter accounts.  We already have nine stories in hand—including stories from American Ballet Theatre and Harlem Stage and artists Ping Chong, Garth Fagan and David Parsons—and we plan to add to that list to a maximum of 50 stories throughout the year.

We know that artists can best tell this story, and we are asking friends to make a short do-it-yourself video using a flip cam, which we will edit and upload to YouTube. Unfortunately, the Coalition is unable to provide cameras or any production assistance. We absolutely will not edit in any way that alters the meaning, or intent, of your comments, and we will send you the link before distribution. Detailed instructions below.

There is no deadline per se, but the first stories in will be featured at launch, no later than July 1. Please read the Instruction & Information below and respond to this email to let me know if you are willing to make a short video. If you cannot do this now, but could do one of the later videos, please also let me know that possibility.

On behalf of the New York City Arts Coalition, we are grateful for all you do – and keep doing – for all of us. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Lacey Althouse

Do-It-Yourself Instructions and Information

What? Do-it-yourself video story for the New York City Arts Coalition, in celebration of the New York State Council on the Arts’ 50th anniversary.

Who? We would prefer these stories come from artists, rather than administrators and artists representatives, and be as personal as possible.

How to? Self produce short video clips using a flipcam (preferred format: .mov, .mp4 or

.m4v). Unfortunately, the Coaliton is unable to provide cameras or production assistance.

Format? In this short video, we want to hear the personal story of how funding from NYSCA impacted your work as an artist. What difference did such funding make when you were starting out?  Were there critical moments in the development of your organization at which NYSCA provided essential support?  Did the “good housekeeping seal of approval” of NYSCA support make other funding sources pay more attention?  Have you been able to provide more access to a larger audience because of NYSCA support?

We need the final product to be one minute or less in length, and we are asking that you permit us to edit, although never in a way that would alter the meaning of what you have said.  There are a few technical details, such as:

Three separate recordings.  Please stop recording between each of the following:

1.       “Happy 50th Birthday” to NYSCA. We need a consistent tag line for these videos.

2.       Your story. We leave the creative aspects of this part entirely in your hands, but do include a sentence identifying yourself and describing your organization.  Feel free to include as background your work space, or whatever you feel is helpful.  (This is the portion that we need to be one minute, or less.)

3.       A brief take that describes more fully your organization.  Include, if possible, some shots of your rehearsal or organization’s space.

Please do not submit more than three clips.

We are not asking you to include an appeal for support from the state legislators for NYSCA.  That can best be done in other ways, and we want these videos to speak to the value of NYSCA and your work as an artist.

Submission?

Videos, once made, can be transmitted in their original format via the nycac.media@gmail.com Dropbox. Once you agree to do this video, you will receive an email form Dropbox informing you that we have shared a folder with you. Please drop the video in there and send a confirmation e-mail to project manager Lacey Althouse of Dance/NYC that includes the name, title and organization for the person you would like identified in the video.

Contact and Q&A? If you are able to do this, we will have the project manager available to answer your questions, but we hope this document will provide what you need.
