A recent article in the New York Times chronicles the tale of Filipino-American, San Francisco Bay Area-based vocal group "Legaci," detailing their jump from rising stars on YouTube to back-up singers for the teenage popstar Justin Bieber.
The article goes on to discuss the barriers many Asian American vocal artists face when attempting to break into the music industry. Rather than gaining an in through more traditional means, many young Asian American artists are actually finding success through the surprising (or maybe not so surprising) outlet of YouTube.
How do you feel about YouTube as an aide to success or a launching of an artistic career? Do you find that this lack of representation (of Asian American artists) is present in other realms of the art world? In theater, visual arts, dance, etc? Had you ever heard of Legaci before this?
