JOB OPPORTUNITY: Director of Development at PlayMakers Repertory Company

PlayMakers Repertory Company is the award-winning, professional theatre in residence at UNC-Chapel Hill and has been honored as one of the best regional theatres in the country.  It produces 10 shows each season along with extensive community engagement and K-12 education programs. Now engaged in a comprehensive fundraising campaign, PlayMakers is looking for a full-time Director of Development to oversee a team of three dedicated fundraising professionals while spearheading significant growth in major giving.


The Director of Development will spearhead the Major Gift program, including identification, cultivation and stewardship of donors including the active and engaged members of the PlayMakers Advisory Council. The Director of Development will be principally responsible for strategizing and securing gifts and commitments for the remaining 4 years of PlayMakers’ 5-year “100 Years of Playmaking” endowment and annual giving campaign.  Excellent writing and verbal communication skills are critical. S/he will also oversee the establishment of an annual alumni giving program for the UNC Department of Dramatic Art.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree is required. A master’s degree is preferred.  A minimum of 1 year of professional-level, direct solicitation/fundraising experience is required.  Experience, maturity, and judgment needed to provide evidence-based guidance to staff. Proven success in securing large contributions from individual donors. High comfort level interacting with senior level executives and people of wealth. Ability to manage and grow an active portfolio of prospects; fearless but smart in the ability to ask for gifts and to position others to ask for gifts. Experience with major gifts, annual fund campaigns, events and planned giving techniques. Demonstrated knowledge of the development process and understanding of all stages of the relationship with individual donors (identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship). Desire to be a strong team player. Experience in higher education fundraising and in fundraising for a theater or arts organization strongly preferred.
