"Minnesotans are presenting concerts, theater and visual arts in private
homes, driveways and back yards. It's a grass-roots strategy of
reaching and building an audience."
What do NY'ers think about using home space to show work? Is this the same as presenting work in a work/live space or a loft space, or are there differences? What are the limitations of this form? The benefits?
I've had a few experiences going to art showings in an artist's own home or loft space, all in the San Francisco Bay Area. From the "audience's" point of view, I think it's a great way to showcase artwork- in the space that it was created, in the atmosphere the artist is surrounded by everyday, admist all their art materials and tools, inspiration, etc.
One art showing I went to in Berkeley became a miniature tour through the artist's house because you had to walk through the entryway, kitchen, dining room, etc. to get to their actual work space. In this respect, the whole showing became like an informal sketch of the artist's life and lifestyle and gave me a much better feel for the artist's work as a whole because I was also being exposed to the different physical elements that influence their work everyday. I think this more complete "picture" of the artist made me even more receptive to enjoying their artwork because I felt that I had more of a connection to the artist, simply by being welcomed into their house. It certainly made me remember their work more because I connect their artwork with my associations of their house rather than just a neutral venue.
