In the cage

I explore the relationship between inside and outside. I consider the contrast between comforting and disturbing events in our lives. Beneath the surface of every culture there is always a hidden world, and I am searching to find beauty in objects that are considered grotesque or bland, or in objects not even considered at all. Between the ages of two and five, during which I was treated with radiation for my sarcoma, a doctor wrapped my entire body with cloth, leaving only the affected areas exposed. This experience is a central metaphor for my thesis. For example, I explicitly display images of internal organs and bodily fluids such as blood that we do not regularly confront in our ordinary life.
