In your own words, what is your ethnic identity? (for individuals)
I was born in India but have lived in New York for nearly two decades. I have had so many different cultural influences in my life, that I find it hard to limit my ethnic identity to just plain "Indian". I strive to pick the best in all the cultures around us to shape my ethnic and personal identity.
Your Artistic Background/Mission
My work is one of pure perspective: I document humanity within the natural world as experienced by disparate cultures. I was born in India and came to New York at the age of sixteen to join my sister. As a first generation immigrant and in keeping with my parents’ wishes, I persevered in academics, graduating from New York’s top universities and achieving professional success in corporate America within a very short time. My relationship with photography was on a long hiatus ever since I left India. Then, a surprise birthday gift from my wife rejuvenated a renewed interest, which eventually led to my body of work in Montana. A few years later, I mustered enough courage to quit my corporate career and embarked on a yearlong journey shooting for commissioned projects and creating personal work. My work has been widely published and won awards from Lucie Foundation, UK Assoc. of Photographers, Photo District News and the BBC amongst others.
Your Creative Influences
Steve McCurry, Andre Kertesz, Jay Maisel, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Frederic Lagrange
