Your Artistic Background/Mission
My art is about depicting the secret life of animals. I paint them as I see them in my waking dreams--capturing them in a fleeting moment of their lives. I do not use sketches from life or photographs, but apply acrylic paint directly onto the canvas from my own mental impressions. I paint intuitively with the image developing as an expression of the painting process. By using vivid colors on canvas that reflect my excitement and awe, I depict the hidden world of animals and the subjective particularity of their lives. My inspiration comes from childhood where I devoured everything I could about animals from documentaries, animal encyclopedias, and animal fiction. I am drawn to individual animal narratives, both real and imagined, in order to paint an emotional reality of their lives. I have taken courses at the School of Visual Arts, Women's Studio Center, and Glen Cove Arts Center. In addition, I have an M.A. in English from the CUNY Graduate School and University Center, a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.A. (double major: Chemistry and English) from Queens College.

Hi Caroline,

You are invited to my solo exhibition at the Philippine Center, 556 Fifth Avenue (corner 46th St) October 18-29, 2010. Opening reception is at 6:30pm October 18 (Monday). The theme of the exhibition is "Painterly Palouse".

Palouse is an area in the northeastern section of Washington State near the border with Idaho. Next to the Ukraine, Palouse is the second largest producer of wheat. It is a beautiful and idyllic area of farmlands, undulating hills, of pastel colored wheat and barley and rapeseeds.

Please come and join us on the 18th of October. You can view my images on my website at: www.carlosesguerra.com.
