JAPAN CUTS 2011 screening: "The Seaside Motel" at Japan Society

July 16, 2011 from 4:30pm to 6:15pm
This hyper-colorful ensemble comedy will bring back sweet memories of Katsuhito Ishii (Party 7, Taste of Tea) and Gen Sekiguchi (Survive Style 5+). The Seaside Motel of the title, incidentally surrounded by mountains with no water in sight, hosts the oddest group of guests: a salesman who deals bogus cosmetics (Ikuta Toma) and a call girl (Kumiko Aso); a businessman with erectile dysfunction (Furuta Arata) and his bored wife; an indebted gambler (Yamada Takayuki), his girlfriend (Narumi Riko),…See More

In your own words, what is your ethnic identity? (for individuals)
I'm a first-generation Chinese immigrant from Ningbo, China. I will always feel strongly for my country and my people, but growing up in the US has also made me see the beauty of Asian-American culture. I grew up with a lot of Japanese and Korean friends, and appreciate and have absorbed a lot of their culture as well.
Your Artistic Background/Mission
I studied visual arts in high school, and have continued to do graphic design for other people in college. Currently, I'm studying management, marketing, and film producing, and I'd like to be involved in the entertainment media industry.

I'd like to help counsel & empower youth through various artistic disciplines, and to help existing artists market themselves well without "selling out". The world is evolving, and we as artists must take ownership and initiative to create our own future.
Your Creative Influences
I learn a lot from my peers and through the communities at Behance.net and Deviantart.com. I enjoy watching Asian war and gangster movies, and my favorite film genre would be nostalgia noir. I also like to read a lot of manga, and have dreamed of creating my own comic as well. Growing up as a kid, I also watched a lot of Chinese dramas with my parents, and I love Wuxia and Chinese Revolution stories.
