In your own words, what is your ethnic identity? (for individuals)
I am Chinese-American.
Your Artistic Background/Mission
I am the author of three books -- BITTERSWEET, a novel (Tuttle Publishing), DAUGHTER OF HEAVEN, a culinary memoir (Arcade Publishing), and ENTER THE DRAGON, a book of children's plays based on Chinese folktales (Main Street Arts Press). Currently I am making KIM LOO SISTERS: PORTRAIT IN FOUR-PART HARMONY, a documentary about four sisters -- daughters of a Chinese paper son and a Polish refugee -- who overcame poverty and prejudice to become a popular American jazz vocal quartet in the 1930s and 40s. The film is more than an intimate profile of four biracial siblings whose roots are Chinese but whose reality is American, it serves as a vivid historical record of twentieth-century American history -- in effect, redefining what it is to be American -- and acts as a prism shedding light on such crucial -- and controversial -- issues as cultural identity, immigration, discrimination, race and gender.
Your Creative Influences
My creative influences continue to change and evolve with time. Those that seem to endure are Taoism, traditional Chinese landscape painting, the Russian authors Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, the French writers Colette and Proust, the French New Wave directors, Taiwanese film director Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Japanese film directors Kurosawa and Ozu.
