Chinese born in Malaysia, living & working in US.
Your Artistic Background/Mission
My focus as a performing artist is to reveal the hidden and invisible. This interest can take the form of movement and imagery that expresses psychological, emotional, or spiritual depth. For me, this tiny seed of discovery becomes the inspiration for a long-term investigation.

As a Chinese born in Malaysia and currently living in New York City, my work reflects a multicultural identity that sits in a unique space between the classical and the cutting edge. Chinese dance and martial arts training has influenced my way of incorporating hand-held props as expressive extensions of the body, now transposed into wearable surveillance cameras and body-mounted microphones that broadcast intimate and unusual physical details in real time. My mixed-discipline dance work incorporate movement with lives and prerecord video and soundscapes. Here subtleties are projected on a generous scale, where the audience is brought smack up against the textures, angles and physicality of the performers.

My movement vocabulary is initiates from breath, energy, memories and the fragile state of emotion. Motionless poise charges with energy waiting in suspension for explosion. Memory and imagination release from the body, reveal the real and the fantastic world. These conflict interweave to evoke an unsettle ‘awkward beauty’. Conceptually focus on issues of voyeurism, exhibitionism, visual authority, private and public spaces. I explore the inherent intrusive and threatening aspect of surveillance technology, but also interject a playful and intimate use of the equipment. Taking the newest modes of communication to articulate the oldest form of storytelling, it translates an evolving conversation between the body and technology.
