In your own words, what is your ethnic identity? (for individuals)
Born and brought up in India , I moved to the United States in my early twenties. I am from the South of India from the state called Kerala.
Your Artistic Background/Mission
Background- At a young age I started my training in Bharatanatyam (Indian classical dance form) at the Nataraja Kalamandir , Thrissur , Kerala under my guru , Mrs.Rajalakshmi. Completed my arangettam at the age of 13 and continued furthur studies under my guru. Also learnt Mohiniyattom at a later stage.
After moving to the United States in my early twenties, I started teaching and performing. My focus is on innovative choreography that keeps the traditional values intact , yet brings a freshness to the performances.
Your Creative Influences
My training in Bharatanatyam combined with my love for history has lead me on a very unique path. My ongoing research has focused on not just the present day techniques, but also influences from the past. In doing so I have come to realize how connected the South Asian art culture is.
My dance troupe has done a unique collaboration with Taiko drums team from NY (OMNY). It was a much appreciated colllaboration.
