Your Artistic Background/Mission
Founded by Choreographer/ Artistic Director Saeko Ichinohe, Saeko Ichinohe Dance Company is a New York-based modern dance company, which uniquely bridges Eastern and Western performance styles as well as contemporary and ancient cultures. The company’s mission includes; to foster the mutual understanding between diverse peoples and cultures through dance and to offer nourishment for the mind to all ages, cultures, and socio-economic groups.

Saeko Ichinohe Dance Company has been creating and performing modern dance works choreographed by Ms. Ichinohe, a Japanese native trained at the Juilliard, merging Japanese culture and traditions with the western dance vocabularies for the past four decades mainly in New York. The company’s goal is integral to its mission and its quest to seek for ways to better communicate through cultures and arts with others. We believes that it is becoming increasingly more important to utilize the arts to foster understanding of differences in the more diversified society today. The company’s commitment and dedication as a cultural bridge between the U.S. and Japan has been acknowledged when Ms. Ichinohe received the recognition from the Foreign Minister of Japan, The 2006 Foreign Minister’s Commendation.

The company’s activities include public performances, lecture-demonstrations, workshops and special programs for communities and families. It has performed in twenty-five states in the country and has been presenting new works regularly in New York City including the venues such as Lincoln Center, Central Park, World Trade Center, Ailey Citigroup Theater, Japan Society and Asia Society. In 1978, the company began performing at public schools in NYC, introducing Japanese culture to K-12 students. The program has expanded to other cities and over 4,000 children have attended the company’s arts in education program.
