Your Artistic Background/Mission
Tze Chun Dance Company (TCDC) creates and presents contemporary dance works that explore relevant themes such as identity, memory formation and the immigrant experience. The company’s repertory consists of stylistically diverse dance works and multi-media projects. Each piece has a specific and carefully crafted aesthetic, often punctuated by poignant theatricality.

In New York City, the company has presented work at: Dance New Amsterdam, Dance Theater Workshop, The Flea Theater, The Tank, Triskelion Arts, Riverside Theatre, Merce Cunningham Studio, CSV Center, DUO Theater, University Settlement, South Oxford Space, The Brooklyn Lyceum, Minor Latham Playhouse, and the 92nd Street Y. TCDC has been presented by the NuDance Festival, DNA Raw Material, WAXWorks, 8cents Collective, CT Meets NYC Dance Fest, FAB Festival and Block Party, Fridays at Noon, and the Dancenow Festival (three years in a row). Tze Chun Dance Company is also committed to supporting dance in the classroom and has worked in residency at Brentwood School in California and Milton Academy in Massachusetts, setting repertory, creating new works, and holding master classes.

The Company utilizes newly developed technology and works with multi-media artists as part of its mission to approach themes from new modern perspectives. In 2008, TCDC collaborated with computer design and programming artist Blake Shaw on a 360-degree video project titled Go-ban360. In 2008, TCDC and documentary filmmaker Peter Buntaine created the 16mm Dance Film Four Mists, which has screened at CSV Center, the Tank, and Maysles’ Screening Room in NYC. Tze Chun Dance Company explores musically driven works, as well as text and sound-based movement. A long-standing collaborative process with composer Daniel Iglesia of the Columbia University Computer Music Center has allowed TCDC to create live video-audio-dance projects such as Phase Vidcoder (2008) and dances with original scores based on non-instrumental sound.

Artistic Director Tze Chun graduated phi beta kappa and magna cum laude from Columbia University with bachelor’s degrees in Dance and American Studies. She is the recipient of a JP Morgan SOAR Grant, American Music Center (AMC) Live Music for Dance Grant, Brooklyn Arts Council Regrant, NYFA BUILD Stability Grant, Puffin Foundation Artist Grant, and a Field FAR Space Grant. In Fall 2008, Tze traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina to research the Tango as a Jerome Foundation Dance Travel and Study Fellow.

The Company recently returned from their first international tour, which included performances, festivals and workshops in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. More information is available at www.TzeChunDance.com.
