In your own words, what is your ethnic identity? (for individuals)
Your Artistic Background/Mission
My art focuses on the common ground between diverse cultural experiences and backgrounds.
As an American artist of South Asian descent, I want to introduce non-western ideas into the current discourse about art in the US, particularly for an audience unfamiliar with foreign concepts and ideas.
Even though my artistic projects derive from the double-edged experience of immigration to this country, I am more interested in commenting on the larger cultural transformations that are taking place on Americans due to the encounter with immigrants. I do not want to speak only to my specific concerns. On the contrary, I want with my works to underline the relevance of the multi-ethnic project that characterizes the founding “concept” for creation of the United States of America.
Your Creative Influences
I work in various media, from abstract paintings, “portraits”, installations and video. I draw inspirations from a variety of sources. The works are a mashup of Northern Renaissance painting, Indian Miniature and Mural painting, Tibetan thangkas, graffiti and cartoons. They also are indebted to the works of Picasso, Grosz, Bacon, Guston, Katz et.al.
