Your Artistic Background/Mission

WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company strives to be a potent stimulus for progress and expansion of the dance/arts world by creating dance works, producing dance concerts, and educating through dance classes.

WHITE WAVE Dance fulfills our mission through the following:

- THE COMPANY: For 30 years, WW has appeared on principal stages across the US, Europe and Asia. Our NY season produces full-scale works by Ms. Kim.

- FESTIVALS PROJECT: Since 2001, the Project has become a mainstay of NY's contemporary dance scene, providing emerging & mid-career choreographers with a venue to congregate, create, rehearse, and present dance works.

- EDUCATION: Provides a wide range of dance education to professional & recreational dancers, and kids' class.

Founded in 1988 by Korean Dance virtuoso Young Soon Kim, WW is dedicated to expressing the power of human emotion through dance. WW inspires audiences to critically evaluate today's social issues in a conversation designed to move all the senses.

In 2001, WHITE WAVE Dance expanded our mission by producing annual dance festivals; DUMBO Dance, Wave Rising Series, CoolNY, presenting 2.6K companies, 13.5K performers to audiences of 70.5K. Having lost our space in 2015, we are negotiating for a new home at 5 Stuyvesant Av., Bed-Stuy, a beautiful neoclassical building, built as a bank, now repurposed as Urban Cultural Center. We will improve facilities into 3 studios and a 200-seat theater.

In 2014, BAM PDP selected WW, leading to our première of "Eternal NOW" at BAM Fisher, now inducted into the permanent collection of the NYPL for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. The WHITE WAVE propels through 2018! A world premiere of "iyouuswe" will feature at the 2017 LaMaMa Moves Festival (May), the prestigious 2018 Vancouver International Festival, then an East Asia tour.
Your Creative Influences
WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company is dedicated to broadening the boundaries of dance. It endeavors to enhance the language of dance through collaboration with music, poetry and visual art of many forms. Its vision is expansive, challenging the threshold of each medium, surging forward to create new possibilities. Artistic Director Young Soon Kim will create works of vision and movement language in reverence and awe of novelty that challenge and broaden the boundaries... reaching in to the inner territories of the imagination, passion and the spirit to create new expressions of dance.

The choreographic process gives precedence to the individuality of each dancer’s expression and personal vocabulary with the choreography mapped onto the dancers bodies in a highly personalized offer in the choreographer – dance relationship. “Here… Eternal NOW” finds its unanimity and its climactic unison through the shared expression of the human experience.

The company’s activity is centered on an annual New York City season, presenting both new works and revivals of selected repertory, which are then presented nationally and internationally. In addition to large-scale public performances, the company will also present frequent showcases, classes and workshops for educational and other community institutions.

WWYSKDC wishes both to share its love of dance and to create works of such power, penetration and feeling that audiences renew their concern for other living beings, their connection with nature, and their appreciation for the rhythmic designs that unite us all.
