New York Art Residency and Studios (NARS) Foundation is pleased to present the work of the NARS International Artist Residency Program 2011 participants. The exhibition title refers to Greek mythology as well as its applications to modern science. A she-monster created from the parts of multiple animals, the Chimera also defines a single organism genetically derived from several distinct cell tissues. The show brings together four artists whose practices and subject matters invite the viewer to consider the origin of the species: the process, multi-faceted materiality and individual elements that render each work a creature of becoming: a chimera in themselves.

Liene Bosquê inserts and leaves behind memories of objects within unassuming landscapes, creating an architectural hybrid with incongruous aesthetics and texture. Katarina Riesing’s reversed photographs and drawings fracture the self-portrait, reconstructing body and skin with astronomical and astrological dimensionality. The moments captured in Rebecca Simon’s paintings shed semblance of societal normalcy in favor of the peculiar, encouraging us to question the narrative presented before us. Photographic installations by Jennifer Williams play with spaces affected by time, overtaking a site such that it becomes a single embodiment of all of its transient encounters.

In perceiving distinct elements as pieces of an amalgamated composition and stripping away layers of imagery, we reveal possibilities for transformation and fluidity of being. Reflecting the nature of the Chimera, ultimately each artist creates something from disparate fragile fragments that is ambiguous or elusory yet poignant and undeniably whole.

The New York Art Residency and Studios (NARS) Foundation is a 501©(3) not-for-profit arts organization committed to supporting artists and curators on an international level as well engaging the local community in Brooklyn and the Greater New York area. NARS provides an array of creative support services and professional development opportunities for emerging and mid-career artists through short-term integrated residency programs, affordable long-term studio spaces, progressive exhibition programs, international exchanges, and engaging public programs that foster global understanding and dynamic cross-cultural dialogues. These services operate in conjunction with our community outreach initiatives to promote greater accessibility to contemporary art for the underserved local community in south Brooklyn.
