3 – 6PM

One girl with courage is a revolution.

CRS Community Films and Think Act Change NYC invite you to screen GIRL RISING, a new feature film about the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world. Afterwards, we’ll discuss some ways you can get involved with the partner NGOs (see below) to improve educational opportunities for girls around the world. Guest speaker TBA. Tickets are $10 and only purchasing online here guarantees you a seat.

Cate Blanchett (Haiti), Priyanka Chopra (India), Selena Gomez (Sierra Leone), Anne Hathaway (Afghanistan), Salma Hayek (Peru), Alicia Keys (Cambodia), Chloë Moretz (Egypt), Freida Pinto, Meryl Streep (Ethiopia), and Kerry Washington (Nepal) narrate this inspirational profile of nine girls from across the globe who vow to get an education despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in their paths. From Cambodian orphan Sokha to Nepalese composer Suma and nomadic Indian Ruksana, each of these girls has an incredible story to tell as they strive to get a proper education, and realize their true potential. In hearing those stories, we discover how a single girl with drive and determination can become the catalyst for positive change on a global scale.

Each girl is paired with a renowned writer from her native country: Marie Arana (Peru), Edwidge Danticat (Haiti), Mona Eltahawy (Egypt), Aminatta Forna (Sierre Leone), Zarghuna Kargar (Afghanistan), Maaza Mengiste (Ethiopia), Sooni Taraporevala (India), Manjushree Thapa (Nepal), and Loung Ung (Cambodia).

Girl Rising also features Freida Pinto and Liam Neeson, with original music from Academy Award-winner Rachel Portman and Lorne Balfe.

Girl Rising is the centerpiece of 10x10, a global campaign to educate and empower girls. The executive producers of Girl Rising are Tom Yellin, Holly Gordon, Paul G. Allen and Jody Allen. Girl Rising booked an exclusive nationwide engagement in 169 Regal Cinemas April 19-25, 2013.
