LABA presents LABAlive THREE: OTHERS

Thursday, May 11, 2017
7:30 – 10:30PM

LABAlive returns for a final presentation this season with a theatrical exploration of OTHER on Thursday, May 11th at 7:30pm at the Theater at The 14th Street Y, 344 E. 14th Street, NYC. Tickets are $18 and available by phone at 646-995-4310 or online at 14streety.org/tickets.

LABAlive THREE: OTHERS will showcase the final group of presenting fellows for this year, Elana Greenfield, Laura Beatrix Newmark, and Michael Leibenluft, followed by a teaching by Reuben Namdar, LABA Teacher and Sapir Award Winner. This night of new theatre will highlight the many ways that the theme OTHER resonates both personally and culturally.

Director Michael Leibenluft (Obie Award Winner), in association with Gung Ho Projects, will present Salesman之死, the story of Arthur Miller’s journey to Beijing in 1983 to direct DEATH OF A SALESMAN. In this theatrical investigation between the two iterations of this play , conceived and directed by Michael Leibenluft with text by Jeremy Tiang, this work examines the question, what is this play in China?

The second of the three pieces, WRENCH by Elana Greenfield (Whiting Writers’ Award in drama), is part IV of a six part play about two women living on ladders during a flood. As the familiar world fades an ancient story/landscape begins to emerge.

“Work that is genuinely original is very difficult to describe…Fury and tenderness, keening sorrow and some of the funniest things I’ve ever read… As a satirist Greenfield refuses to grant consolation but as a poet, she offers in her words again and again the consolation of beauty, pleasure, renewal and faith.” - April Bernard, Bomb Magazine, Editors Choice.

“In the work of Elana Greenfield, there is a mistrust of borders and boundaries that seems to extend to the medium of writing itself.” Jason Grote, The Brooklyn Rail

The final of the three pieces is Hannah and Her Sisters: 5 stories on m(OTHER)hood by Laura Beatrix Newmark which examines the production of the next generation and how it inherently brings with it tremendous feelings of “otherness.” Featuring Jennifer Gilmore (author), Sara Ivry, Gabriella Spierer, Becky Skoff, and Laura Beatrix Newmark.

Don’t miss the last opportunity to see the LABAlive series this year. At the final show of the season, the company will celebrate all of the 2016-2017 LABA Fellows and welcome in the new theme of War + Peace for the upcoming season.
