Mythical Mosaic: Nina Kuo

December 29, 2023 – January 19, 2024
12AM

Opening Reception: Friday, December 29, 2023, 5-7pm

Chinese American Arts Council/Gallery 456 is pleased to present Nina Kuo: Mythical Mosaic, on view from December 29, 2023 through January 19, 2024.

Mythical Mosaic is a presentation of photographic montages that reveal the Asian American persona created with archetypal images that respond to rising of expressive freedoms tying in Asiatic geographies, symbols, and nuances. These mythologies translate composed forms for our imaginative times. Presented figures are mostly performers, actors, popping out in modern Chinatown and its enclaves. They bring in meditative spiritual realms for all to engage, perhaps hiding in alleys or tunnels of our city where ancestors inhabited in secret. See Maggie Cheung, Bohan Phoenix, Opera stars, and Corky Lee with Kuo’s Pvt. Danny Chen street poster tribute.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

NINA KUO is a Chinese American photographer, painter and video-artist experiments in new realities. Her work deals with feminism, Asian arts and at times combating racism, social issues that address the community providing her with insight into the expressive possibilities of art. (Lectures : ICP, CityLore, CPC, Met. Mus., New School, Beijing and Japan etc.) Today she creates art in multi-symbolic themes and calligraphic shapes while presenting scholar images in a surreal manner for emotional appeal. These images provide metaphors for our global society and its cultural ambiguity. This haven of image-making seduces and bridges many idioms. Her video works relate to a destiny of contradictions and surprise. Reviewed in Forbes.com 2020, The Art Newspaper 2023, NY Times 2022, etc.
