About the play: In 1960s Cairo, amidst the shimmering heat of a city pulsing with life, a passionate love affair blooms between Amal, a married Egyptian woman, and Nick, a visiting Canadian professor 10 years her junior. In a cold house in wintry Toronto, an older Amal is becoming a burden to her daughter Janine who is unsuccessfully trying to restart her life in middle-age. Both women get buried under the weight of the past in a tug-of-war that neither can truly win. With Amal’s past constantly banging at the front door, what is real and what is memory? Based on the memoirs of a woman who fought for her independence during the turning point of Cairo’s modern history, This Time traces the aftermath of her radical decisions while spying into her turbulent past.
