Pehchaan (Identity) - South Asian Contemporary Dance Production

Saturday, February 24, 2024
7 – 9PM

“Pehchaan” (Identity) is a dance production exploring some of the unique identities we experience as South Asians of the Diaspora. By engaging with the stories of our community, including immigrant and diasporic perspectives, we examine our roots, origins, culture, gender, sexuality, and dreams, to express what constitutes our hyphenated identities.
We dream of what a world that embraces us wholly could look like, while simultaneously articulating the realities of our lived experiences. How do we find a sense of belonging? How can identities that seem conflicting not only co-exist but harmonize? How can we find ways to celebrate our culture while critically engaging with the aspects of it that reinforce hierarchy, division, and hatred?

With Indian Contemporary Dance movement and music from South Asian folk traditions, indie artists and even Bollywood, we strive to delve into the layers of what it means to be ourselves. “Pehchaan” is performed by Ishami Dance Company and features Grammy Award Nominated music artist Annette Philip.
